How the lottery works
Which distances and who can enter
All five adult distances go through the lottery: the XL (about 350 miles, self-supported and overnight), the 200, the 100, the 50 and the 25. The exception is the juniors: the Junior 50 and Junior 100 use open registration, no lottery needed.
Minimum ages are based on your age on race day: 16 for the 200, 14 for the 100 and 12 for the 50. The XL and 25 pages don't list a minimum, so ask the organizer before you plan a family trip around it. Junior categories run 14-18 for the 100 and 12-18 for the 50.
What it costs to enter
Nothing, until you're picked. You enter your card when you apply, and it's only charged if you're selected. Then you pay the registration fee, a processing fee, state sales tax and any add-ons you chose. Every distance page still lists the 2027 entry fee as "coming soon," so we don't know the number yet. Budget for it before Nov 21 so a "yes" email doesn't sting.
Selection rules worth reading twice
- One entry per person. Riders found with more than one application have all of them voided. Don't hedge by entering two distances.
- 1,000 Mile Club consideration. Multi-time 200 finishers close to the 1,000 Mile Club get consideration.
- Organizer's call. Life Time runs the selection at its discretion and can change the process.
10 AM or noon?
The official site disagrees with itself. The registration page and homepage say the lottery opens at 10:00 AM CT; each distance page (XL, 200, 100, 50, 25) says 12:00 PM CT. Plan on 10 AM CT (9 AM MT, 8 AM PT, 11 AM ET). It's a random draw over a two-week window, so there's no need to refresh at 9:59. Just don't leave it until the 15th.
What are the odds of getting into Unbound?
We'd love to give you a number. We can't, and you should be wary of anyone who does: Life Time doesn't publish how many people enter or how many spots each distance has. What the organizer does say is that demand is too high to take everyone who wants to ride, which is why every adult distance is lottery-only.
What actually moves the needle:
- Which distance you pick. The 200 is the headline event and the one most riders dream about. If you mostly want a weekend on Flint Hills gravel, think honestly about whether the 100, 50 or 25 fits your year.
- Your history. Multi-time 200 finishers chasing the 1,000 Mile Club get consideration. Everyone else is in the random draw.
- Taking luck out of it. The routes below don't depend on the draw. They cost money, time or a fundraising effort instead.

Every way into Unbound without the lottery
| Route | Cost | Guaranteed? | Distances | When |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Training Camp + Entry | $2,200 (camp only: $1,000) | Yes | XL, 200 or 100 | Camp Apr 8-11, 2027 |
| Qualifier coin | Your entry to a qualifier race | No: half by results, half by random draw | 200 or 100 | Next listed: Sea Otter, Apr 16, 2027 |
| Volunteer 10+ hours | Your time | Skips the lottery | Not stated | Past volunteers: Nov 1-15 with emailed code |
| Charity entry | Fundraise or pay; includes registration and service fees | Yes, while spots last | Not stated | First come, first served |
| Coaching + Entry | Not published | Yes | Your choice | Limited, first come, first served |
| Life Time Club-Access | Membership (6+ months) | Early access or guaranteed entry | XL, 200, 100 | Must be a member 6 months before the lottery |
Training Camp + Entry
The official camp runs Apr 8-11, 2027 in Emporia: four days of guided Flint Hills rides, mechanic support, survival talks and most meals, plus an entry to the Flint Hills Gravel Ride. The Camp + Entry package is $2,200 and guarantees a spot in the XL, 200 or 100. Camp only is $1,000. It's the priciest route, but it's the one that also teaches you how to finish.
Qualifier race coins
Life Time hands out at least 50 Unbound coins at each qualifier. Half go to top finishers by category; the other half go in a random draw after the awards ceremony. You have to be there with the qualifier tab from your number plate, and winners can register for the 200 or 100. The next qualifier on the official list is Sea Otter Classic Gravel on Apr 16, 2027 in Monterey, CA (90 miles). The 2026 qualifiers (Crusher in the Tushar, Heathland Gravel, The Rad Dirt Fest and Big Sugar) have already happened.
Volunteer 10+ hours
Volunteer at least 10 hours at Unbound, or at the Life Time Big Sugar Classic (limited to the first 100 volunteers who choose an Unbound option), and you skip the lottery. Friends and family can donate their hours to help you reach 10. If you volunteered at the last Unbound, watch your inbox for a code: volunteer registration runs Nov 1-15.
Charity entry
Pick an official charity partner, then fundraise or pay, and you get a guaranteed entry. The cost covers your entry plus registration and service fees, and the minimum donation is up to each charity. The 2027 partners are the Life Time Foundation, the Chris Klug Foundation and the American Cancer Society (its DetermiNation team). Spots are limited and first come, first served, so don't wait for lottery results if this is your plan.
1:1 coaching with entry
The Premium Coaching + Race Entry package with Boundless Coaching includes a guaranteed 2027 entry at the distance of your choice and three months of personalized coaching. Packages are limited and first come, first served. Plain 1:1 coaching without the package doesn't include an entry. The price isn't listed on the Unbound page.
Life Time membership
Life Time members who've held a Club-Access membership for at least 6 months before the lottery are eligible for early-access registration or guaranteed entry into the XL, 200 and 100. Club members also get the early lottery window on Oct 25.
If you're selected
Congrats, the hard part's done. Here's what happens next:
- Your card gets charged for the registration fee, processing fee, state sales tax and any add-ons.
- Know the deferral rules. Under the deferral policy, you can defer until Jun 3, 2027 at 1:00 PM CT (start of the expo). That gets you a guaranteed spot the following year, but this year's fee isn't refunded and you pay the next year's entry fee again when you re-register Nov 1-15.
- Book a bed early. Emporia fills up on race weekend. The Unbound race page has a map of places to stay near the start.
- Get ready for flint. The Flint Hills chew through tires, so start with our sister site's guide to the best gravel tires.
If you're not selected
It stings, but it's not the end of your 2027 season. Charity entries, coaching packages and Training Camp + Entry are first come, first served, so check what's left right away. The Sea Otter qualifier coins are still ahead. And if you volunteer 10+ hours at the 2027 race, you can come back as a past volunteer during next year's Nov 1-15 window. The registration page doesn't mention a waitlist for 2027, so don't count on one.
